about

“Things” is the third studio album from Kubikmaggi, recorded at Norway’s Ocean Sound Recordings Studio –– itself located on the small island of Giske. Audio mastering was overseen by Alan Silverman.

Synthesizing some fundamental and richly inventive concepts of the last few years, “Things” now offers audiences six resultant –– substantial –– compositions. Driven by an anxious, yet inspired psychological state, those six tracks rush from avant-garde improvisation to blues –– and then to reggae. They span the dizzying distances between stately Soviet film music and radical minimalism; between jazz, pop, rock... and everything else that Kubikmaggi’s members have encountered. In a word, “Things” reflects their listening experiences of the recent past, the present, and future. It reflects contradictory, yet fertile states of yearning, joy, wellbeing, humor –– and an ever-present mood of estrangement.

Currently Kubikmaggi consists of:

• Ksenia Fedorova: vocals, piano, gusli
• Max Roudenko: bass, melodica
• Ilya Varfolomeev: drums, percussion
• Alexander Timofeev: saxophone

"A boundless Norwegian sea rolls constantly past the studio windows. It tumbles into the Arctic Ocean. Inside that studio, a rather stark view of design and comfort prevails. Four individuals have come here from Russia –– to record some music. In the middle of a spacious hall sits Ksenia Fedorova, with a grand piano before her –– and gusli to her side. Behind two glass doors stand Max Roudenko, bass guitar in hand, and Ilya Varfolomeev –– surrounded both by his drums and other percussive marvels. Daniil Koronkevich presides at the mixing desk. The tide ebbs and flows; the sun rises and falls. Three days of recording; six compositions. Each of these musicians will find the songs or sensations that have twisted and turned within them. Collective experiences are superimposed upon each other, giving rise to dialogs, improvisations, new thoughts, conflicts –– and remarkable coincidences, too."

about

Kubikmaggi Saint Petersburg, Russia

While the band's sound dwells within chamber music, the trio are known for breaking musical forms based on several polar music styles. Within one composition styles may vary between jazz, rock and classical music. These shifts may occur very rapidly, almost abruptly, or flow naturally into one another. Early jazz gives way to baroque-classical motifs, Russian folk is followed by prog rock. ... more
